Monsoon Season Impacts Rice Sowing This Kharif Season In India. Millets See A Higher Sowing

The up and down in weather in the recent few weeks have impacted the sowing of crops this Kharif season. While India was experiencing a rainfall deficit in June, the present scenario is completely reversed. With heavy rainfall lashing in most parts of the country, the overall numbers have exceeded by 2 per cent. Though the deficit has improved, its impact has already been experienced during the sowing season in June.

Kharif Sowing Saw A Major Dip This Year

June and its harsh weather majorly affected the Kharif season. This year witnessed a decrease of 9 per cent sowing in comparison to 2022, according to a report by Business Insider. Among all types of crops sowed in the last month, rice and pulses had to face the most impact. The monsoon season is playing a major role in this year’s rice production. First, it began with a rainfall deficit and now floods and lashes are getting reported all around.

A huge part of sowing also occurs in the month of July. This is why the rest of the month’s climate will be impactful in this year’s crops. For pulses, black lentils and pigeon peas saw lesser sowing this Kharif season. Not just these, the Business Insider report also states how there has been a huge dip in the sowing acreage of cotton, jute, and oilseeds as well.

United Nations Declared 2023 As The International Year Of Millets

Most of us are aware of the fact that this year is being recognised as the year of millets. This Kharif season clearly shows the progress in the millet sowing. There has been a sharp increase in the sowing of millets in comparison to 2022. Along with this, there has been a rise in sowing of jowar as well.

Some states of India are taking significant steps to increase the production of millet. Chattisgarh and Odisha launched programmes to promote millets in the states and also award incentives to the farmers to promote the cultivation of the crop.

Kharif season is surely seeing some major changes in the growth of crops this year.
