According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express or IE, the Multiplex Association of India or MAI has released a statement which notes that the moviegoing experience costs around ₹1,560 for an average Indian family.

Karan Johar, during the table discussion, mentioned that one of the reasons why people are not coming to cinemas as much as they used may be because of how expensive the entire cinema experience has become. He noted that snacks are sold at an exorbitant price.

Once you include the price of the ticket as well as the cost of food and beverages at these cinemas, he said that the total expenditure for a family of four could be ₹10,000. This may not be very affordable for the vast majority of people.

The MAI then responded to this by pointing out the fact that the average ticket price reported by a major multiplex chain between 2023-24 was ₹258. The average spend per head for food and beverages at these cinemas was ₹132. Hence, the total expenditure for a family of four would be around ₹1,560.

In past interviews, as cited by the IE article, Ajay Bijli, who is the PVR-INOX chief, mentioned that price is not the only factor. Lacklustre movies also fail to attract crowds.
