In a shocking turn of events, about 40 animals and birds have lost their lives at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Zoological Museum, according to the latest report of the Central Zoological Museum Authority. The recently released report revealed how so many animals and birds of Byculla Zoo died between 2022 and 2023. Most of these were birds and many belonged to groups of endangered species. People are becoming more concerned with so many deaths.

The data shared in this report by the Central Zoological Museum Authority are quite scary and indeed concerning. It stated how over half of the animals and birds, about 58 per cent, of the zoo died and the reason behind the unfortunate cases was cardiac arrest. Shockingly, birds were more in numbers among the deaths during 2022 and 2023. According to a report by Mumbai Live, about 10 per cent faced the terrible issues of respiratory diseases.
The dead animals and birds included barking deer, turtles, macaw parrots, mules, and more. Among the 47 animals and birds that lost their lives at the Byculla Zoo in Mumbai, 33 were birds. Also, 17 mammals died and 10 of them belonged to the deed family members, according to a report by Mid-Day. Such high numbers of deaths are alarming and authorities and people in general are becoming aware and concerned about such news and details mentioned in the report.
Reading all about the deaths in a year, the Watchdog Foundation has asked for an investigation. Pimenta Godfrey, the Watchdog Foundation trustee, has asked for an inquiry. The foundation mentioned that some of these dead animals were endangered species. They are demanding an inquiry to know the truth, the reasons behind the deaths, and whether the number of deaths is on the rise.

Here’s How The Zoo Responded
The news is making headlines for everyone. In between all these, the management of the zoo reacted to the news of cardiac arrest and respiratory issues. The management claimed the reasons for deaths to be natural causes such as an increase in age or any dispute among animals and birds.
