Mumbai: 70-Year-Old Building In Bandra Housing Mamagoto Restaurant Demolished

A landmark building, Gazebo House in Bandra, Mumbai, that housed the popular Mamagoto restaurant was demolished on Friday. The 70-year-old structure stood on the bustling Hill Road, a prime location known for its vibrant atmosphere. The restaurant was a favourite among locals and tourists, offering a unique blend of Asian cuisine and a lively dining experience.

Mamagoto had become an integral part of the Bandra food scene. The restaurant, with its quirky decor and eclectic menu, drew crowds from all over the city. However, its location on Hill Road was also contributing to significant traffic congestion. The building, positioned right along the road, had reduced the road’s width to just 13 metres, less than half of its official 27-metre width. This narrowing caused frequent traffic jams and posed a challenge for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The BMC decided that the building had to be removed to restore the road to its original width and ease the congestion. Despite the popularity of Mamagoto, the civic body proceeded with the demolition, having provided alternative accommodations for the residents and businesses within the building. The final notice for demolition was issued on June 15, and the demolition took place on August 9.

For many, the loss of Mamagoto is a bittersweet moment. The restaurant was more than just a place to eat; it served as a social hub where friends gathered and made memories. Its quirky interiors, featuring vibrant murals and cosy seating, added to its charm, making it a beloved spot in Bandra.

However, the demolition was seen as a necessary step by the authorities and some local residents. Traffic congestion on Hill Road had become a pressing issue, with the narrow road struggling to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Vinayak Vispute expressed optimism that the road widening would significantly improve traffic flow after clearing the debris from the demolished building.

The building’s demolition marks the end of an era for Hill Road and for Mamagoto. The restaurant had carved out a special place in the hearts of Mumbai’s food lovers.  The restaurant’s closure is a loss to the local culinary scene. The decision reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to balance development with the needs of its growing population.
