Mumbai Police has imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure preventive measures. This will remain in effect from December 20, 2024, until January 18, 2024.

The order, dated December 18, prohibits gatherings of four or more people and is issued ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The police clarified that the likelihood of terrorists or other anti-national elements using drones, remote-controlled microlight aircraft, paragliders, etc. is why the precautionary order is issued.

According to the statement, terrorist groups may target VVIPs but also put public safety in jeopardy, damage property owned by the government, and interfere with law and order in urban areas.

No flying activities, including drones, remote-controlled microlight aircraft, paragliders, paramotors, hand gliders, hot air balloons, etc., are permitted, with the exception of aerial surveillance conducted by the Mumbai Police. Apart from this, the deputy commissioner of police (operations) may grant particular written clearance for the use of aerial objects within the city.

The police issued a warning that anyone breaking the order would be prosecuted under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. The city has previously implemented Section 144 as well. The fact that the present directive expressly mentions the potential for terror acts and the targeting of VVIPS, however, is what gives it significance.

The deployment of these aerial items over the city is forbidden during the full 30-day period of the prohibitory orders, according to the authorities.

There are so many big events lined up in the city with Christmas and the New Year coming up. The section imposed is actually raising questions about its effects on the celebrations. Dolphy D’Souza of the Bombay Catholic Sabha, however, stated that the Christmas celebrations will not be impacted by this decree.
