Mumbai Metro Line 2B: Chembur Station Set To Open In April Before Planned Timeline

Trains have always been the lifeline of Mumbai. Along with local trains, the metro has now become a crucial part of daily life for Mumbaikars. And now, another major upgrade is in progress. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to start Metro Line 2B services in phases, with Chembur station opening earlier than planned in April. Scroll down to know more!

Metro Line 2B Services To Start Soon In Mumbai

MMRDA has announced that the first operational stretch of Metro Line 2B, connecting Andheri West and Mankhurd, will begin services in phases. As reported by The Free Press Journal, officials confirmed that the Chembur station will be opened first. The idea is simple—check commuter response and offer better connectivity at an early stage.

Earlier, the metro line was scheduled to open in three phases. The first phase includes a 5.39-kilometre stretch between Diamond Garden and Mandalay. Authorities completed this section in 2025, and it received mandatory safety certification in November last year. With this clearance in place, the stretch is technically ready to run.

As per the original plan, the second phase would have extended the route from Diamond Garden to Saraswat Nagar. The final phase would then connect Saraswat Nagar to Andheri West. This last stretch will allow seamless integration with Metro Line 2A and improve east-west travel across Mumbai.

What Was The Initial Plan?

Chembur station was originally scheduled to open in the second phase in 2027.  According to The Free Press Journal, however, MMRDA reviewed this timeline. Why? Chembur’s a major transit hub for the eastern suburbs. Officials felt that waiting until 2027 would delay much-needed public transport access for commuters.

MMRDA decided to open Chembur station earlier than planned. Officials pointed out that nearly 80% of the station’s work was already complete when the decision was taken. Construction at Chembur station has now been fast-tracked. Teams are completing the pending work and carrying out all required safety checks. Once the station clears these inspections, it will open to the public in April.
