According to an article that was recently published by The Times Of India or the TOI, the initiative aims to develop an integrated transport network through ropeways. It is a part of India’s ambitious Parvatmala Project. A detailed survey will soon commence to formulate development plans.

Particular emphasis will be on reducing travel time between Mumbai’s airport and suburban areas. The proposal’s significance stems from MMR’s unique geographical features and growing urbanisation challenges.

The region, stretching from Palghar to Uran-Pen in Raigad district, faces mounting pressure on existing transport infrastructure. The cable car system would complement current road, rail and metro services whilst providing access to key attractions including Elephanta Caves, Matheran Hill station, Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary.

India’s Parvatmala initiative is reportedly one of the world’s largest ropeway programmes. With an estimated investment of ₹1,250 billion through Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the nationwide scheme aims to establish 200 new ropeway projects covering over 1,200 kilometres by 2030.

The implementation model offers flexibility, allowing either PPP or joint financial collaboration between central and state governments. This approach aligns with the broader objective of addressing urban congestion whilst providing cost-effective connectivity in challenging terrains.

The initiative is particularly relevant given that 30 per cent of India comprises mountainous regions where traditional transport infrastructure development proves difficult and costly.

Ropeways present an economically viable alternative, offering superior returns on investment whilst minimising environmental impact. Transport ministry sources suggest that the project will significantly enhance mobility options in metropolitan areas whilst boosting connectivity to tourist destinations.
