MMRDA Attempts 5th Time To Launch Mumbai’s Kandivali-Gorai Ropeway

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is on its 5th attempt to launch the much awaited Kandivali-Gorai ropeway. The project has made four attempts to see the light of day but has failed. MMRDA will do a detailed study of the project. This project will help both tourists and Mumbaikars reach the other side of the city easily and in considerably less time.

Kandivali-Gorai Ropeway Project

The plan is to establish a connection between the Global Pagoda and Gorai from the Kandivali West neighbourhood’s current Mahavir Nagar Metro Station on the Link Road. The other two well-known vacation spots are Essel World and Water Kingdom, which are close to the Global Vipassana Pagoda. These far-off locations are on the other side of Manori Creek.

To connect the city‘s western suburbs with the island city’s touristy side through a cable car, MMRDA will carry out thorough research. It will hire a consultant before the monsoon to compile a thorough project study and analyse the feasibility and requirements. (as per free press journal)

The first four attempts were between January and August of 2020 and February and October of 2022. According to the earlier studies conducted, the 7.2 km project will cost around  ₹568 crore.

Travel Time Will Be Reduced To Half An Hour

Reaching Gorai is not an easy task. Mumbaikars have to use different types of public transportation to reach that place. People have to take the local train, then road transport, and then sail on the ferry to reach Gorai. Travel time is significantly increased by using the road from Mira Road to Bhayandar.

According to MMRDA, if the Kandivali-Gorai ropeway gets a green signal, it will help reduce the travel time taken by Mumbaikars to reach this spot. Another advantage of the ropeway will be that people will explore the tourism side of this village-like side of Mumbai.

Currently, it takes about an hour and a half to reach the destination, but with the ropeway, one can easily reach it in just half an hour. The residents belonging to the Gorai belt will also get better connected to the city.
