The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has undergone a significant technological upgrade with the implementation of an advanced Intelligent Traffic Management System or ITMS, marking a pivotal moment in road safety and traffic monitoring As part of this programme, 52 AI cameras have been set up along the expressway that will monitor a number of traffic violations like speeding and not wearing seat belts. Mumbai-Pune Expressway Gets AI Cameras At 52 Locations
According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or the HT, the cameras are deployed across 52 strategic locations. These cutting-edge AI-powered cameras equipped with sophisticated radar technology are revolutionising traffic enforcement.
These intelligent surveillance systems go beyond traditional speed monitoring, comprehensively tracking multiple traffic violations including mobile phone usage, seat belt non-compliance, and lane discipline infractions.
Speed regulations have been meticulously defined to ensure safe passage through different terrains. In mountainous ghat sections, light motor vehicles are restricted to 60 kilometres per hour, with other vehicles limited to 40 kilometres per hour. Conversely, on standard routes, passenger cars may travel up to 100 kilometres per hour, while alternative vehicles are capped at 80 kilometres per hour.
Other Upcoming Improvements That Are In The Pipeline
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Regional Transport Office has unveiled plans to further enhance the system’s capabilities. Upcoming improvements include automatic number plate recognition at all cameras and toll booths, enabling seamless electronic challan issuance for traffic rule violations.
Rahul Jadhav, the deputy regional transport officer, emphasised the critical importance of driver responsibility. “Strict adherence to traffic regulations is paramount,” he stated to HT. Additionally, he highlights the system’s primary objective of preventing accidents and promoting road safety.
The expressway experiences substantial daily traffic. Approximately 40,000 vehicles traverse the route on weekdays and up to 60,000 during weekends. This technological intervention aims to manage this high-volume traffic more efficiently and reduce potential safety risks.
