The early onset of the monsoon in Maharashtra has brought Mumbai to a standstill. The city witnessed an unusually early and intense monsoon that caused waterlogging, affected train and flight schedules, and even inundated an underground metro station. As per IMD’s latest forecast, more rain is expected in Mumbai today and over the next few days.
Amid Heavy Rains, IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Mumbai
According to The Times of India, since Monday morning, areas like Pune, Satara, Solapur, Raigad, and Mumbai have experienced significant rainfall. The incessant rain has caused flooding and infrastructure damage in these areas. Mumbai, for one, recorded over 200 mm of rainfall between Sunday midnight and Monday afternoon in many areas.
There have also been several incidents of short circuits and wall collapses in the city since Sunday. The IMD issued a ‘red alert’ in Mumbai for heavy rain on Monday, which has been brought down to a ‘yellow alert’ for Tuesday.
Keeping the relentless rains in mind, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has directed the administration to remain on high alert and carry out immediate damage assessments across the state. Authorities like the Municipal Corporation and Disaster Management teams have been asked to remain vigilant as the IMD forecasts further rain with thunder and strong winds.

Waterlogging, Flight & Train Delays
Waterlogging was reported across Mumbai due to heavy rain since Sunday night. This disrupted traffic in several areas. According to reports, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport was forced to temporarily shut its runways on Monday during peak hours due to severe rains and decreased visibility. This affected about 80 flights on Monday. The newly inaugurated, underground Worli Metro Station was inundated and MMRC had to close the route for inspection and repair work. Mumbai’s local train system was also hampered after the heavy rain. There was an average delay of 10 to 15 minutes on the Central, Harbour, and Western lines.
South Mumbai Witnesses Highest Rainfall
