Mumbai Local Trains To Get Metro-Like AC Coaches
According to Hindustan Times, CM Devendra Fadnavis has urged the Centre to replace all coaches of Mumbai’s suburban trains with air-conditioned ones equipped with automatic doors. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic Mumbra accident, which claimed five lives on June 9.
After the incident, the CM announced that he would urge the Centre to introduce automatic doors in suburban railway coaches to help prevent such accidents in the future. On Friday, he announced that his request has been approved, adding that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will also make a formal announcement for this soon.
Elaborating on the plan, he clarified that automatic doors will not be retrofitted into existing coaches. Instead, the Indian Railways will provide new air-conditioned coaches, equipped with automatic doors.

All You Need To Know About This
Mumbai locals are infamous for being extremely crowded, especially during peak hours, and the doorless coaches only add to the safety risks. Data shows that, in the last three years, as many as 7,565 commuters died and another 7,293 suffered injuries while travelling in the Mumbai local trains. Keeping these staggering numbers in mind, the CM requested better coaches for the Mumbai suburban train network.
According to the announcement, Mumbai’s suburban trains will receive metro-like coaches, equipped with air conditioning and automated doors. The best part is that there will be no fare hike, and the Mumbai locals will remain pocket-friendly for Mumbaikars.
With these changes, the authorities hope to bridge the gap and make travel safer for commuters in Mumbai locals as well. We can’t wait to see how these new and safer coaches will change the way Mumbai commutes.
