Mumbai is set to unveil its very first bird park, a pioneering project by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or the BMC that promises to transform urban recreation and wildlife conservation. Situated on a vast 17,150 square metre plot in Nahur’s eastern suburbs, this ambitious aviary will extend the existing Byculla Zoo’s capabilities. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this new project in Mumbai!
Mumbai Will Soon Get Its Very First Bird Park In Nahur
The park’s design is meticulously crafted, featuring distinctive geographical zones representing Africa, Australia, and the USA. According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express or the IE, each zone will showcase birds native to these regions.
This will create an immersive ecological experience for visitors. The facility will not only be a habitat for avian species but also a comprehensive recreational space, incorporating jogging tracks, basketball and volleyball courts, and a sporting arena.
Ornithologists and bird enthusiasts will appreciate the dedicated interpretation centre, designed to provide educational insights into avian life. The park is set to house an impressive collection of 22 bird species, including exotic specimens like black swans, toco toucans, and white peafowl.
Sourcing The Birds, Budget And Other Important Details
These birds will be acquired through strategic exchange programmes and transfers from the Byculla Zoo. Costing approximately ₹100 crore, the project has already secured crucial approvals from the Central Zoo Authority. BMC officials anticipate completing the park by 2027.
The tender processes are expected to commence once final layout permissions are obtained. Dr Sanjay Tripathi, Director of Mumbai Zoo, emphasises the project’s potential to significantly boost tourism in Mumbai’s suburban regions.
Beyond its recreational value, the bird park represents a forward-thinking approach to urban wildlife conservation, offering Mumbaikars a unique opportunity to engage with diverse avian ecosystems in a meticulously designed, green urban environment.
