Mumbai To Get 4 New Helipads In THESE Areas; No, They Are Not For Commercial Use

Mumbai is now planning to build four new helipads along the Coastal Road and Bandra Kurla Complex over the next six years. The initiative aims to build a future-ready and multi-modal transport network in the city. Here’s everything you need to know about these new helipad projects in the city!

Mumbai Planning Helipads Along The Coastal Road & In BKC

It seems like authorities in Mumbai are leaving no stone unturned to make the city future-ready. According to The Free Press Journal, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority are set to develop four new helipads across the city over the next six years.

Under the proposal, two helipads will be constructed along the upcoming Mumbai Coastal Road Project. The remaining two helipads will be developed in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) under MMRDA. Authorities have clarified that these helipads are meant for emergency services, air ambulances, and evacuation operations during disasters. This means they are not meant for regular commercial use, like passenger transport or regular helicopter services in the city.

Helipads To Be Built Near Coastlines

This project also aligns with Mumbai’s plan to expand high-speed infrastructure, including corridors like the Coastal Road and the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR). Reportedly, one helipad will be built at Worli along the southbound stretch of the coastal road. Another will come up at Charkop, adjoining the northbound stretch connecting Versova to Bhayander.

According to The Indian Express, these locations are close to the coastline to ensure helicopters can operate without obstruction. They can enter the city from the seaside without interference from high-rise buildings, ensuring smoother operations. These helipads will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
