Mumbai witnessed its hottest day of the year on Tuesday, with the mercury rising to 39.2°C. The record heat, which was measured at the Santacruz observatory, has raised concerns among the locals. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning that the following days will be hot and humid.

IMD reported that the Santacruz observatory registered a high temperature of 39.2°C, the highest temperature in the city in the season to date. Other locations too saw scorching temperatures, with Colaba at 38°C, Palghar at 40°C, and Thane at 39.7°C.

A heatwave warning was issued for March 9 to 11, according to Sunil Kamble, director of IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai. While it has not been renewed, hot and humid weather is likely to continue, with day temperatures expected to hover between 36°C and 38°C.

According to a social media post by freelance weather observer Rushikesh Agre, Tuesday’s temperature of 39.2°C was the highest Mumbai has seen this summer. He wrote that although there may be relief in the coming days, residents must exercise caution and take the necessary safety measures to avoid sunstroke and other heat-related illnesses.

The sudden temperature rise has also been felt in the daily routine, with commuters suffering due to hot conditions and humidity. The warm weather has also brought about a hike in the consumption of power as individuals employ coolers and air conditioners to manage the heat.

IMD has cautioned people to remain hydrated, avoid the sun, and take precautionary measures to reduce the impact of heat stress. While some respite would be seen, the temperature might remain above average for the next few weeks.

It is a tough test for its residents as Mumbai grapples with harsh sunshine. Whether tourists are battling the sun or children are looking for shelter from its heat, the city persists in its resilience.
