The Ghatkopar rail over bridge (RoB), Mumbai’s famous British-era bridge, is set to be replaced by a much wider overpass. However, the city will have to wait longer for this infrastructural redevelopment. The latest report suggests that the authorities have pushed the initial deadline of end-2025 to June 2027, and here’s all you need to know about it.

With the aim to ease traffic congestion in the eastern suburbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) planned to demolish and reconstruct the Ghatkopar RoB to make a wider overpass. However, as per the latest updates, the completion timeline for the bridge has now been extended from late 2025 to June 2027. According to the Hindustan Times, commuters are now counting on the east-west crossing bridge being built between Vidyavihar and Vikhroli for interim relief.

The old Ghatkopar bridge will be demolished after the right-hand lanes of the new bridge are near completion, which would be in another year. This will ensure less traffic congestion and allow some traffic movement. The officials revealed that they will divert the traffic onto the right-hand lanes, and then continue work on the left side.

In 2018, the fatal Gokhale Bridge collapse prompted the BMC to start structural audits of bridges all over Mumbai. IIT-Bombay helped in the audit and found that the 78-year-old Ghatkopar ROB was overloaded and needed major structural redevelopment. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) was tasked with reconstructing the bridge with funding from the BMC.

The Ghatkopar bridge starts from the Golibar Road junction, near LBS Marg on the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, and goes on to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH). It connects Ghatkopar East to Ghatkopar West and is a very important communication link in Mumbai.

According to MRIDC officials, the portion of the Ghatkopar bridge spanning the railway tracks will feature a cable-stayed design, while the section extending over LBS Road will incorporate a bowstring steel span. This way, the bridge will be constructed without pillars that will add to the traffic congestion on the road below. Furthermore, the Ghatkopar bridge will also cross two metro lines and the bullet train, Hindustan Times reported.
