On Monday, a tragic incident in Mumbai left four members of a family dead after what police have described as suspected food poisoning. The family, along with some relatives, had biryani for dinner at home, and later that night, they consumed watermelon kept in the house. After some time, all four began feeling unwell, complaining of symptoms such as vomiting and loose motions. Read on to what unfolded next.

Family Of 4 Died After Watermelon Consumption

As per a report by NDTV, all four of them were rushed to the hospital, where all of them eventually died. Police have registered a case of accidental death and stated that medical and forensic reports will determine the exact cause. While instances of food poisoning due to biryani are common, as the food is more prone to contamination, what is quite shocking is the consumption of watermelon. The incident has led to questions about how something as simple as watermelon can lead to such severe consequences.

Can Watermelon Consumption Cause Death?

As per reports, watermelon can cause food poisoning and, in severe cases, can lead to serious health implications. Watermelon’s high water and natural sugar content make it an environment where bacteria can multiply quickly. There have also been many reports of watermelons being allegedly injected with sugar water to add extra sweetness. If a contaminated watermelon is injected with such liquids, it can lead to food poisoning.

Another important reason that can lead to food poisoning after watermelon consumption is the timing. The timing matters when consuming watermelon. It is said to avoid fruits or heavy foods late at night, preferably after 8 pm, as digestion slows down during sleep. The best time to consume watermelon is in the morning, as a daytime snack or in between meals.

Late‑night fruit consumption does not automatically cause food poisoning, but it can lead to digestive distress if the fruit is contaminated.
