Mumbaikars, Buckle Up! Monorail To Return With 21 Upgrades, CCTV, Charging Points & More

The continuous glitches in the Mumbai Monorail forced authorities to temporarily stop services in September 2025, leaving many commuters disappointed. After months of upgrades and safety checks, there’s finally good news. The monorail is set to return with improved systems and modern features. Scroll down to know what has changed.

Mumbai Monorail To Come Back

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that the upgraded monorail has officially received the required safety clearance. As per The Free Press Journal, this approval covers both the newly introduced trains (rolling stock) and the advanced Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system that manages train movement. Bureau Veritas, an international testing and certification body, carried out an independent safety review.

The latest safety clearance has brought the 19.54-km stretch between Chembur and Jacob Circle closer to restarting services. After remaining shut for months due to repeated disruptions last year, the corridor is finally moving towards a comeback. If final approval comes through, commuters may soon see Mumbai’s monorail back in action.

New Features Awaits!

The new ‘Made in India’ rakes come packed with 21 upgrades, and honestly, they’re not basic at all. As per The Free Press Journal, every coach now has CCTV cameras for better security, plus dedicated seating for persons with disabilities. You also get charging points, so low battery panic is sorted. Add dynamic route maps, smoother suspension, better fire safety, metro-style interiors and real-time monitoring — and the ride just feels smarter and safer.

Before getting the final safety clearance, MMRDA didn’t take any shortcuts. Teams first inspected the new train sets at the manufacturing facility. After that, they ran two months of detailed trials on different parts of the corridor. Engineers carried out static and dynamic tests, checked oscillations, and closely tested the advanced CBTC signalling system. All these checks made sure the monorail meets proper safety and design standards before reopening.
