Mumbai Metro: India’s Second Largest Metro Network

According to Hindustan Times, with the partial opening of Lines 2B and 9, the Mumbai Metro is now the second-largest metro network in India. With the inauguration, albeit a partial one, of the first phase of the Mandale-Diamond Garden and Dahisar East-Kashigaon lines, the city’s metro network has expanded by an additional 5.53 km and 4.7 km, respectively.

This takes the Mumbai Metro’s operational network to 100 km, making it the second-largest in the country. According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Mumbai Metro is on track to achieve a “fully integrated 337-km metro network” over the next three to four years.

Currently, Bengaluru’s Namma Metro operates a 96-km network with 83 stations, having added about 19 km in the past year. This makes it the third largest metro network in the country. Hindustan Times reports that Kolkata, home to India’s oldest metro network, has a network spanning 73.42 km, followed by Hyderabad at 69.2 km and Chennai at approximately 54.2 km.

This doesn’t even come as a surprise! With an operational network of 416 km and 303 stations, the Delhi Metro remains the largest metro network in India. Notably, metro expansion in the capital is far from saturated. According to Hindustan Times, around 65 km of additional metro network is currently under construction.

The Delhi Metro operates a fleet of 343 trains comprising 2,368 coaches. Following the recent opening of two new sections on the Pink and Magenta lines, India now has the third-largest metro network in the world. In total, 26 cities across the country are connected by a combined metro network spanning over 1,143 kilometres.
