The installation takes over a small room in the NMACC’s Concourse Area but creates a stunning and mind-bending experience within its confines. The room is entirely covered in mirrors, and hundreds of multi-coloured LED lights hang suspended from the ceiling. The flickering lights create an optical illusion that seems to extend into infinity as it reflects in the mirrors. As soon as you step inside, you will be amazed by the play of lights and patterns.
Throughout her career, Kusama’s art has been deeply influenced by her personal experiences and struggles. She particularly drew inspiration from her battles with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The motifs of dots and infinity mirrors are believed to represent her desire to escape the limitations of her mind and transcend the boundaries of the physical world.

The concept of “Infinity Mirror Room—The Eternally Infinite Light of the Universe Illuminating the Quest for Truth, 2020” is part of Kusama’s broader series of over 20 such rooms scattered across the world. Her first Infinity Mirror Room was created in 1965 and exhibited in New York. It featured a mirrored space adorned with polka-dot emblazoned, phallic-shaped, toy-like objects. Unfortunately, another artist’s similar work led to Kusama being overshadowed in the creation of this form of art. It ended up in personal setbacks and challenges for the brilliant artist.
Beyond their visual appeal, Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms delve into deeper themes of human connection and disengagement. ‘Infinity Mirror Room—The Eternally Infinite Light of the Universe Illuminating the Quest for Truth, 2020’ has become a permanent installation at the NMACC. It offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience and unravel its mysteries in roughly 15 minutes.
The captivating and thought-provoking installation adds another masterpiece to Yayoi Kusama’s body of work.
