Mumbaikars, You Will Now Be Fined ₹25,000 For Littering And Spitting In Public Spaces

Mumbai residents, this is for you. The city’s civic body has rolled out strict new rules to keep public spaces clean. Spitting, littering, and dumping waste in Mumbai can now attract fines from ₹200 to ₹25,000. These strict measures were recently announced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Here’s everything you need to know.

Littering, Spitting & More Can Attract Fines In Mumbai

Effective from February 3, 2026, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has implemented strict rules on spitting and littering in the city. According to a report by News18, these rules aim to improve cleanliness across Mumbai. Officials say these steps will keep public spaces hygienic, reduce pollution, and encourage responsible waste handling in the city.

These regulations fall under the Solid Waste (Management and Handling), Cleanliness and Sanitation Bylaws 2025. Anyone found flouting the rules can face heavy penalties. Under the new system, spitting in public spaces will attract a fine of ₹250. Throwing garbage on roads can cost ₹500.

Who Will Be Fined & For What

If someone fails to separate wet and dry waste, they can be fined ₹200. According to News18, dumping or transporting construction waste without permission can attract a penalty of up to ₹25,000 per vehicle. These rules apply to everyone, including households, shops, offices, industries, schools, public institutions, and religious places.

Anyone violating the norms can face strict action from the civic body. Regular cleaning drives and special campaigns are being organised by BMC to ensure proper enforcement. The bylaws also list penalties for 21 other offences. These include public urination, feeding animals or birds in public areas, washing clothes or utensils on the streets, dumping debris, and burning garbage. Event organisers who fail to clean public spaces within four hours after a gathering will also be fined.

The new measures will also focus on waste segregation at source, proper collection, storage, and processing of garbage. They cover biomedical waste, electronic waste, plastic waste, and construction waste.
