It is no secret that Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is one of the most populated cities, and has a poor air quality index. But there is hardly anything done about this. According to the statistics, every location in Mumbai city has a poor to unhealthy ranking in terms of air quality. And it is suggested that people should use masks when travelling outside. Also, we are aware of the negative effects that this will have on the health of residents. However, now there is a call for action against this polluted air that people are breathing.
Need For Clean Air In Mumbai
Mumbai’s coastline has always helped the city to keep pollution levels in check. However, increasing construction work like metro lines, buildings, roadworks, etc has contributed to the poor quality of air. Moreover, the increasing carbon dioxide emission from vehicles is a prime factor for this. But, this needs to change and ‘Waatavaran’ — an NGO working for climate change has raised a petition on Jhatkaa.org.
Waatavaran’s Petition For Clean Air
The NGO has raised a petition concerning the construction work that contributes to the two-thirds of poor AQI of Mumbai. The construction works going on in the city are not following certain rules that include ‘sprinkling water to suppress dust re-suspension, ‘using covering sheets’, and more. They have stated that due to these guidelines not being followed, Mumbai’s AQI is worsening and the month of December witnessed a massive rise in AQI numbers.
The petition further states that the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) is tracking Mumbai’s AQI and has alerted the municipal corporations. Moreover, SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research) issued an advisory to the residents to avoid early morning activity and after sunset. Also, the locals are advised to not jog but to take short walks and avoid exertion.
