As per a report in The Hindu, Mumbai’s Carnac Bridge has officially been renamed Sindoor Bridge, after Operation Sindoor. It was inaugurated by CM Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday. Moreover, the renaming decision was taken to remove the history of British Governor Carnac, who was known for oppressing Indians during the colonial period. The photos of the inauguration were shared on the official X account of the CM of Maharashtra.
The bridge was completed on June 13 and officially opened to the public this week. The original Carnac Bridge was closed in 2022 after a structural audit deemed it unsafe. The new bridge has a length of 328 metres and includes 4 vehicular lanes. It is a key east–west connector linking Masjid with P D’Mello Road in Mumbai.

Re-Opening Of The Bridge Brings Huge Relief For Commuters
According to The Indian Express, the reopening of the Sindoor Bridge has brought great relief to daily commuters. Many were previously forced to reroute through Yellow Gate or Crawford Market, both of which remain heavily congested. Now, the bridge is expected to reduce travel time by at least 30 minutes. Commuters also said that even ambulances and fire brigades would often get stuck in traffic during the bridge closure.
It should also be noted that the old bridge had only 2 lanes, while the new Sindoor Bridge has 4 vehicular lanes for smoother movement. Furthermore, the reconstruction work was carried out jointly by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Central Railways over the last one and a half years.
