The new Dakshinayan outlet brings flavours passed down through generations from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Since Mumbai is already obsessed with South Indian food, the same excitement is expected from Thanekars. And who wouldn’t be excited by classics like Podi Idlis, Thayir Idlis, Oothappams, Vadais, and those crispy dosais that take us back to our college canteens?

But wait, there’s more. Dakshinayan in Thane has also introduced dishes with unique variations you won’t find anywhere else, except in their Mumbai outlets, of course. From Vengaya Oothappam (onion oothappam), Nei Idlis, Chettinad-style curries from Tamil Nadu, to Puli Sevai, the South Indian food lover in you will be spoilt for choice.

If you are craving comfort food, worry not. This South Indian restaurant in Thane also serves Thayir Sadam (curd rice) and crispy vadas. The best part? Every dish comes served on a banana leaf for that complete, authentic experience.

In a time when food is often experimented with for social media trends, Dakshinayan, a family-run eatery, has stayed true to its roots. From sambhar to rasam, they have held on to authentic recipes that have made them a favourite South Indian restaurant in Mumbai. It’s also a much-loved spot for several celebrities. The restaurant was founded in 2005 as a simple 24-seater eatery by Beena and Hemul Gandhi. Today, it is run by their son Vir Gandhi, who is taking the experience to newer audiences.

Talking about the new Thane outlet, Beena and Hemul said, “We’re so excited for the Thane launch, it feels like welcoming more people into our home. Years back, it was a small space, two of us, and a vision of making something big yet real. We didn’t want to follow trends, we just wanted to serve the kind of food we believed in.”

Beena further stated, “My roots in Coimbatore shaped how I cooked and served people. Even today, with every order, we try to keep that same emotion alive. It has always been about creating a space that feels familiar and comforting, no matter where you’re from. And this is what we hope to bring to Thane.”
