Northeast, India’s paradise unexplored, is home to some of the rarest and most unique wildlife on the planet. But in spite of being blessed with gems of mother nature, the Northeast is at risk of losing it all. One of the most considerable threats is the loss of habitat throughout the Nagaland range. Recently a disturbing video is making rounds on Instagram showing some Naga locals murdering a Great Indian Hornbill. According to media reports, the incident occurred in Bhandari Town of the Wokha district in Nagaland. And it’s shameful that this saddening news comes from a place where Hornbill Festival is the main tourist attraction.
Of Nagaland And Its Tortured Nature
There is no pain worse than witnessing the celebration of extreme cruelty to beautiful wildlife.
Recently, DCP Expeditions’ video post has left netizens and animal rights activists in shock. The heart-wrenching video shows a few men hitting the beautiful bird with a stick and stomping on its neck. In the caption, DCP Expeditions mention how ironic it is that Nagaland celebrates the Hornbill Festival each year. The incident in the Wokha district is creating mass outrage on social media. Nagaland Police has already taken three people into custody under the Wildlife and Arms Act. And even if strict action is taken against the culprits, there is no excuse to torture nature so brutally.

Pride Of Our Country, The Great Indian Hornbill
The Great Indian Hornbill is not only a pride of Nagaland but of the whole Country. This rare beautiful bird is one of the members of the hornbill family. Mostly occurring in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, the species is declining in number. The bird was listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2018. Killing a bird that is known to have lived 50 years in captivity is in itself very inhuman. The Great Indian Hornbill also forms an important part of tribal cultures. And it is the duty of every citizen of India to preserve our rare and glorious wildlife and culture.
