Promising seamless travel options for commuters across Mumbai, the airport will be connected via road, metro, rail services, and even water transport options, upon completion. Scroll on to know more about this.
Navi Mumbai International Airport To Have Multimodal Connectivity
According to Fortune India, the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport will boost multi-modal connectivity upon completion. Reports suggest that the airport will be accessible via highways on three sides and will feature metro and suburban rail connections—including direct airport-to-airport metro services. Additional transport options are also in the pipeline, such as monorails, sky trains, water-based hovercraft services, and even high-speed bullet trains.
The Navi Mumbai Airport is scheduled for Phases I and II inauguration in June. Also, commercial operations are expected to begin towards the latter half of this year. In the first two phases, one runway, and one terminal with a passenger capacity of two crore are being prepared. The second runway with four terminals and a passenger capacity of nine crore, will be built in Phases 3, 4 and 5.

All About Airport’s Mobility Plans
The Navi Mumbai International Airport will greatly improve regional and interstate travel. Here’s a detailed multimodal transport connectivity plan for the airport –
1. At present, Navi Mumbai Airport is only reachable by road. However, this will soon change with the inauguration of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as the Atal Setu Nhava Sheva Sea Link—a 22-kilometre sea bridge. Once operational, it will drastically cut travel time, enabling South Mumbai residents to access the airport in under an hour.
2. The Ulwe Coastal Road is another major ongoing infrastructural project. Spanning 6.7 km and featuring six lanes, it will link Amra Marg with the Atal Setu junction at Shivajinagar and continue directly to the airport.
3. Kalamboli, near Panvel, is transforming into a key gateway to the airport. Positioned at the intersection of five major highways—the Sion-Panvel Highway, Panvel Bypass, NH-4, NH-17, and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway—the area is undergoing major development to streamline access to the airport and JNPT Road from all directions.
4. Railway authorities are upgrading Panvel Station into a major terminus for outstation trains to enhance long-distance rail access to the airport.
5. The new airport in Navi Mumbai is accessible through a 27-km ‘fourth suburban corridor’ of the Belapur/Nerul-Kharkopar-Uran suburban line. The nearest suburban railway station is at Targhar Railway Station. This station will also become the main link station to the new airport from CST and central suburbs like Thane and Kalyan.
6. The state authorities are fast-tracking metro connectivity. The Navi Mumbai Airport Express Line Metro will connect the new airport to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, covering a distance of 34 km. It will have a total of 20 stations, comprising 14 elevated and 6 underground. The airport will connect directly to Mumbai Metro Lines 2D, 8, and also the Navi Mumbai-Pendhar-Belapur-Taloja Metro line.
7. Authorities will soon start a water taxi service across Mumbai. Hovercrafts will come from Colaba, while cargo ferries will commence from Raigad.
8. There are also plans to connect Maharashtra and Telangana with modern bullet trains, which will cover a distance of over 750 kilometres in less than 4 hours. This bullet train route will have a station near the airport as well.
