Tragedy struck over two decades ago when the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre – the iconic American landmark buildings – were destroyed in a terrorist attack on the 11th of September, 2001. Close to three thousand people lost their lives on that day. The destruction caused by the incident was huge. A Greek Orthodox church was destroyed by the falling debris of the Twin Towers. This week, the church is finally reopening for the first time since the 9/11 attacks.
Church Opens Anew After 9/11 Attacks
The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church which was located at 130 Liberty Street in Manhattan, downtown, was destroyed during the 9/11 attacks as it got buried under the rubble of the Twin Towers, which were the main target of the attack. Since then, a lot of time and energy has been spent trying to rebuild the church. The efforts have finally come to fruition as the reconstruction of the church is complete and is now open The reopening of this church is very timely as the flock of the church was able to attend the mass for the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas.

The Church Designed By A Renowned Spanish Architect
The design of this newly built church is very unique. And why wouldn’t it be? It was built by the talented Santiago Calatrava. The Spanish architect is renowned and his works are known for resembling living organisms. Imagine that! Buildings that look alive! Calatrava is also responsible for building the Oculus transportation hub, which is also located close to the newly built church.
CBS reported that his work on the church was influenced by the churches in Constantinople. The dome of this church is shallow and has 40 ribs, just like the dome of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. It is a tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
