New DGCA Rule: Close Window Shades During Flights Near India’s Western Defence Airfields

The DGCA has enforced a new rule requiring all aircraft to keep window shades shut during take-off and landing at defence airfields near India’s western border. The move aims to prevent unauthorised visual access to sensitive military zones and enhance national security. Airlines must now inform passengers and ensure full compliance throughout the critical flight phases.

New DGCA Rule: Close Window Shades During Flights Near India’s Western Defence Airfields

In a move aimed at tightening aerial security, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a new directive requiring aircraft window shades to remain closed during take-off and landing at defence airfields, especially those located near India’s western border. This precautionary measure comes amidst increased scrutiny over activities near military zones and efforts to restrict visual exposure of sensitive locations.

The DGCA’s directive applies to all domestic and international flights operating at or near defence airfields, including chartered and private aircraft. This rule mandates that all window shades must remain shut during the aircraft’s ascent and descent phases. According to The Times of India, this rule excludes emergency exit rows where window visibility remains essential for safety.

The move aligns with growing concerns around unauthorised surveillance and photography near military establishments. Civilian aircraft flying over or operating close to military-run airports such as Srinagar, Jammu, Jaisalmer, and Bhuj fall under this guideline. These areas often sit close to India’s sensitive western border, where strategic security remains a top priority.

Guidelines For Airlines And Travellers

The DGCA has instructed airlines to inform passengers about this requirement via in-flight announcements and safety briefings. Cabin crew are also responsible for ensuring that shades remain closed during the designated flight phases. This step complements the authority’s existing ban on any form of photography or videography near or above defence airfields.

India TV News reported that authorities temporarily suspended flight operations at over 30 airports earlier this month due to heightened military activity. Although flights have resumed, the DGCA continues to implement strict protocols to ensure security measures remain robust in the current geopolitical climate.

Why This Rule Matters

This rule not only restricts visual access to military zones but also helps deter potential threats posed by technology-enabled passengers. With smartphones capable of high-resolution imaging, window views during critical flight moments could inadvertently capture and share confidential military details.

By mandating window shade closures, the DGCA reinforces its commitment to national security while ensuring aviation safety. Passengers are encouraged to comply fully and support efforts to safeguard strategically vital areas, particularly in regions vulnerable to external threats.
