A new highway connecting Okhla Barrage to the Yamuna Expressway is in the works. This proposed route will pass through the Hindon-Yamuna Doab, offering much-needed relief from traffic congestion. The current Noida-Greater Noida Expressway often faces bottlenecks, causing delays and increasing pollution.
New Highway Between Okhla Barrage And Yamuna Expressway Proposed
The project, under consideration by the Noida Authority, has been proposed to Uttar Pradesh’s Public Works Department (PWD). The authority has asked for the new route to be classified as a National Highway, which will accelerate its development. The goal is to reduce the heavy traffic flow currently burdening the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, a key route between Noida, Greater Noida, and Delhi.
The new highway is expected to either be a six-lane expressway or an eight-lane ground-level road. Once built, it will provide commuters with an alternative route, helping reduce the volume of vehicles on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. This will save time, cut fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions, contributing to improved air quality.
Traffic snarls on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway currently add to the area’s pollution problem. Vehicles stuck in traffic burn more fuel, leading to higher emissions. The new highway will help curb this environmental risk by offering smoother, quicker journeys.

Crucial Recognition For Funds
On 18 September, the Noida Authority submitted a formal proposal to the Principal Secretary of Uttar Pradesh’s PWD. The move was a critical step in getting the project recognised as a National Highway. This recognition is crucial for securing the necessary funds and approvals to begin construction.
However, the project cannot move forward until authorities complete further procedures. Once they finish, they can begin the groundwork for the new highway. As a National Highway, this route will receive priority attention from central and state authorities.
The new highway is expected to improve more than just traffic flow. It will also support future growth in Noida, Greater Noida, and surrounding regions. Better infrastructure attracts investment, leading to economic development and job creation. The highway will also benefit residents by reducing travel time and offering a more comfortable commuting experience.
The highway is part of broader efforts to address environmental concerns in the area. By lowering vehicle emissions, it will contribute to air quality improvements, aligning with ongoing environmental conservation efforts.
