Easter Island in Chile is probably one of the most fascinating places to visit in the world. Its surrounded by rich history and culture and houses one of the most mystical archaeological wonders, the humanoid statues that are extremely old. There are somewhere around 900 such statues on the island, which is known as Rapa Nui in the native tongue. In a series of events, however, archaeologists ended up discovering a new Moai statue on the island.
New Moai Statue Found Inside A Dried Up Lagoon
This new statue that was recently discovered, was found lying in half buried inside a now dried-up lake. This lake is situated inside the volcanic crater of Rano Raraku volcano. The new statue was discovered by a group of scientific volunteers from three Chilean universities.
However, it seems that this discovery was every bit of a shock to the resident Rapa Nui people as it was to the scientific community and to the rest of the world. So far, there are more than 900 statues known to exist on the island, however, this is the first one to be discovered inside a water body that has now dried. The scientific community is fascinated by this new discovery and is eager to see what doors it opens.

About The Statues Of The Eastern Island
The origin of these iconic statues remains largely a mystery to historians and archaeologists. The statues are shrouded in mystery and the recent discovery has only added to that intrigue. We know very little about the statue and the people who made it. The purpose of these statues is also largely unknown. Although there are many hypotheses as to what they might be.
So far, we know that they were built in the 13th Century BCE by probably the ancestors of the Rapa Nui people. However, their purpose is still unclear. Although, experts guess that the statues must have something to do with water bodies as a large number of statues have been discovered around water bodies. This new discovery inside a now-dried lake only serves to bolster that argument.
