This can help improve climate conditions and reduce pollution. The research was led by Hana Kahleova, MD, PhD, director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. It highlights that a vegan diet is not just good for our health but for the climate too.
Her team examined dietary records from a randomised clinical trial involving postmenopausal women. These women followed a low-fat vegan diet that included half a cup of soybeans daily for 12 weeks. Researchers then linked the participants’ food intake to environmental impact databases. This helped estimate greenhouse gas emissions and energy demand linked to their diets.

Health Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet
According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the results were surprising. Greenhouse gas emissions dropped by 35%, and the total energy required to produce food for these participants fell by 34%. These reductions mainly came from eliminating meat and dairy products.
The reason is simple. Producing meat and dairy generates significantly higher greenhouse gas emissions compared to plant-based food items. Livestock farming requires large amounts of land and affects the climate due to methane emissions. In comparison, plant-based food has a lower carbon footprint.
But here comes the main part. In the trial, these postmenopausal women experienced a 92% reduction in severe hot flashes and lost an average of 8 pounds (around 3 kg). The research indicates that replacing meat and dairy with plant-based food can reduce emissions while also improving health.
