New Year Celebrations In India: These States Have Imposed Restrictions Amid COVID-19

After the rapid spread of the new strain of novel coronavirus in the UK, Canada, France, Spain, Sweden and other countries, states in India have imposed strict restrictions on New Year celebrations. The fresh restrictions have been imposed to mitigate the chances of another outbreak of COVID-19 in India, which has been curtailed to a great extent now. India has also suspended all flights to and from the UK. On December 27, the country reported the lowest number of COVID-19 cases in the last six months. The total number of coronavirus cases in India now is around 10.2 million with around 279 new deaths. Here are the Indian states that have re-imposed restrictions on New Year amid the new wave of the pandemic:

1.Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, night curfew will be imposed from 11 PM to 6 AM till January 5, 2021. The authorities have notified about taking strict actions against the violators of the order. The state has allowed New Year celebrations only before 11 PM. Maharashtra has also imposed mandatory quarantine rules for passengers from Europe, the UK and the Middle East.

2. Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has entirely banned New Year festivities on the beaches, beach roads, clubs, resorts, hotels and similar places on the nights of December 31, 2020 and January 1, 2021. The beaches will remain shut to visitors during these days. The restaurants and hotels can operate as normal following the COVID-19 restrictions but they are not allowed to host New Year parties.

According to The Indian Express, an official release has stated, “On the occasion of New Year, there is a possibility of large gatherings from December 31 evening in beaches and on roads and this might lead to a spike in Covid-19 cases. In other countries, the second wave of new positive cases are being reported and due to this situation, there is a need to intensify Covid-19 containment measures.”

3. Rajasthan

Rajasthan has imposed a curfew from 8 PM on December 31, 2020 to 6 AM on January 1, 2021. Markets will be shut in the state after 7 PM on New Year’s eve. Also, all social, political and religious gatherings will remain banned. Prohibitions have also been put on the sale of firecrackers.

4. Uttarakhand

The capital of Uttarakhand, Dehradun has prohibited New Year celebrations in restaurants, bars and hotels on December 31 and January 1. Violators will have to face punishments under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Epidemic Diseases Act and other applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code.

5. Karnataka

In Karnataka, prohibitions have been put on gatherings without social distancing in restaurants, pubs and similar places. According to Live Mint, CM BS Yediyurappa has said, “In view of the public opinion that there was no need for night curfew, the decision was reviewed and after consulting with cabinet colleagues and senior officials it has been decided to withdraw the night curfew.”
