The storm that struck the Northeast United States on Monday, December 18, is said to have resulted in the deaths of at least four people in various situations. According to local sources, three males were killed in the northeastern states and a lady perished in flooding close to Charleston, South Carolina, as the storm headed towards Canada.

Northeast US Storm Wreaks Havoc

By mid-morning, the National Weather Service reported that rain had reached sections of northeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey with over 5 inches (13 centimetres) and parts of many other states with over 4 inches (10 centimetres).

Nearly 70 mph (113 kph) wind gusts were recorded around the southern New England shoreline. Schools were closed, and flights were cancelled as a result of the disruptions.

As of Monday night, hundreds of thousands of customers in an area extending north from Virginia through New England lost power, including over 423,000 in Maine and roughly 200,000 in Massachusetts, according to Poweroutage.us.

Advisories of flooding and flash flooding were issued for the metropolitan area of New York City, as well as for portions of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, as well as for regions of Pennsylvania, upstate New York, western Connecticut, and western Massachusetts.

Infrastructure, Businesses & Homes Facing Damage

Some schools were forced to cancel lessons or send children home early due to the storm. Due to flooding, some state routes were also closed, especially in Londonderry and Ludlow, which saw significant flooding in July.

Although homes, businesses, and infrastructure in the northeast will sustain damage, Gov. Phil Scott stated that they do not anticipate the same level of destruction as in July. Having said that, flooding is happening again in several of the areas that were affected in July. For them, therefore, this July is a true gut hit.

Authorities claimed that early on Monday morning, strong winds caused a tree to fall on a trailer, killing an 89-year-old man from Hingham, Massachusetts. A man in Windham, Maine, was killed by a falling tree, according to authorities, as he was clearing debris off his roof.

According to the Times Union, a driver was washed into Catskill Creek near Catskill, New York, after his car slid past a roadblock on a flooded road.

Water reached some downtown businesses’ basements five months after flooding engulfed Montpelier, the capital of Vermont, as the city kept an eye on the Winooski River’s elevation, according to officials.

Due to the projected surge of rivers, a shelter was established in Barre, and Morrison asked residents to avoid driving through floodwaters on Monday night. Authorities in Bay Head and Mantoloking had to close roads close to Barnegat Bay due to flooding caused by heavy rain and high tides.

In suburban Philadelphia, the Delaware River overflowed its banks, forcing the closure of several roads. Workers in the Washington Crossing suburb cleared fallen tree limbs and erected barriers alongside roads.
