The permission for building the new bridge was granted 25 years ago. Since then, the project has faced a number of challenges that have prevented its completion. One of the biggest problems was that the initial route of the bridge necessitated the desecration of an old protected monument.

The initial plan proposed the bridge go through the premises of Salimgarh Fort. However, the Archeological Survey of India or the ASI protested this design. Following these objections, the route of the bridge was changed.

Apart from this, a number of issues with respect to the foundation were prohibiting its completion, according to an article by News18. After all the troubles, the new bridge will finally begin construction soon.

According to the article, the structure was built in 1866. It is close to 150 years old and has become a part of the ethos of the city. The bridge serves as a connection between the Old Delhi Railway Station and the Shahdara.

The bridge is used by motorists as well as by the Indian Railways. The new bridge will be built adjacent to the old one. The need for a new bridge was prompted due to a number of reasons.

During monsoons, Yamuna, the river over which the bridge is located, floods making it a safety hazard for travellers. Moreover, the bridge is extremely old. Once the new bridge is ready, shifting traffic from the old bridge to the new one would be easier.
