Nestled near the awe-inspiring ruins of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka, a new beacon for artistic expression has emerged: Hampi Art Labs. Launched in February 2024, this innovative centre is the brainchild of Sangita Jindal and Tarini Jindal Handa, and an initiative of the JSW Foundation.

Haven For Exploration

Hampi Art Labs isn’t just an art centre; it’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Indian art and heritage. Its very location, steeped in the rich history of the Vijayanagara Empire, where art, architecture, and literature flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries, serves as a potent source of inspiration.

The surrounding landscape itself, dominated by the majestic Tungabhadra River, becomes an integral part of the artistic experience. Spread across nine acres, Hampi Art Labs offers a haven for artists of all disciplines. The facility boasts well-equipped exhibition spaces, perfect for showcasing established and emerging talents.

But the heart of the Labs lies in its dedicated studios. Here, artists can delve into a range of artistic pursuits, from traditional printmaking and sculpting to contemporary new media. Workshops for ceramics and metalwork further enrich the creative environment, fostering a connection between artistic expression and the region’s vibrant craft traditions.

Vibrant Artistic Community

However, Hampi Art Labs goes beyond providing mere physical space. It actively cultivates a vibrant artistic community through its residency program. Artists are invited to spend three months immersed in the creative energy of the Labs.

This allows them to experiment with new techniques, explore fresh ideas, and engage with the local community. This interaction isn’t just one-sided; it allows artists to incorporate the rich cultural tapestry of Hampi into their work.

The architectural design of Hampi Art Labs itself reflects its core philosophy. Organic forms and locally sourced materials pay homage to the surrounding environment. Accessible rooftops and green spaces further blur the lines between the built environment and the natural world.
