Envisioned as a majestic seven-storeyed tower, Satkhanda remains frozen in time, its construction abruptly halted after only four levels were completed.
Satkhanda’s Architectural Allure
Commissioned by King Mohammed Ali Shah between 1837 and 1842, Satkhanda served a dual purpose. Primarily intended as a watchtower, it offered sweeping vistas of the city, allowing for surveillance and strategic planning. Local lore weaves a captivating tale, suggesting the tower’s purpose extended to witnessing the crescent moon during Eid celebrations.

The Story Behind The Unfinished Lucknow Tower
While a popular narrative suggests the king’s demise marked the end of the project, historical records reveal a more intriguing reason. Local legend claims the king suffered a serious injury while descending the stairs of the unfinished tower. This incident, perceived as a bad omen, led many to believe that supernatural forces opposed the tower’s completion. Fearing divine disapproval, the construction consequently stalled after the fourth floor.
Presently, there are ongoing efforts to preserve this architectural gem. While the possibility of completing the tower remains a distant dream, restoration works aim to safeguard its existing structure and ensure its survival for posterity.
