Development always comes at a cost. And for Bangalore, the cost of the Namma Metro project is not just the money spent on it, but the over 9000 trees that were felled in the city. The metro project aims at decongesting the Garden City, which may no longer remain green, if trees are chopped down, without replanting or planting new ones. Here’s more to the story.

Over 9000 Trees Chopped For Bangalore Metro To Date

According to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) forest wing and Karnataka Forest Department, a total of 9154 trees were chopped down across Bangalore due to the Namma Metro project. This large number of chopped trees is just related to Purple and Green Lines. Once work starts on extending the Pink, Yellow and Blue lines, it would lead to the felling of far more trees.

Sustainability Shouldn’t Be Compromised For Mobility

A report by Times Of India reveals that 1712 trees were removed from land belonging to the forest department and another 4075 trees within the jurisdiction of BBMP. Times Of India urged the need for a mid-round approach when it comes to mobility versus sustainability in Bangalore. It emphasised more consideration to be given to the environment and chopping trees only when it’s absolutely necessary.
