Typhoon Wipha, part of a series of continuous tropical cyclones, has battered East and Southeast Asia over the past few days. It struck Hong Kong on Sunday with heavy rain before making landfall along the coast of China’s Guangdong province, uprooting trees and forcing over 200 people to seek shelter in temporary relief centres.
Typhoon Wipha Makes Landfall In China
Typhoon Wipha disrupted travel and daily life across Hong Kong and southern China today, grounding over 400 flights and affecting around 80,000 passengers in Hong Kong alone.

Multiple tropical storms have damaged infrastructure and disrupted travel as Typhoon Wipha made landfall in southern Guangdong on Sunday. Heavy rains lashed cities such as Yangjiang, Zhanjiang, and Maoming, accompanied by strong winds exceeding 118 km/h. According to a report by CNN World, the typhoon not only uprooted trees but also sent more than 200 people into temporary shelters. However, after making landfall at around 5:55 pm, Wipha began to weaken. Despite being weaker, the storm continued to batter the region with heavy rain and strong winds.
In Hong Kong, weather authorities lowered the typhoon signal from 10 to 8. The city’s airport authority reported that nearly 80,000 travellers had to reschedule their flights as around 400 flights were grounded due to the storm. Authorities suspended public transportation, including ferries, on Sunday due to rough sea conditions in Hong Kong.

Mass Evacuations Across Guangdong
After striking Hong Kong, Typhoon Wipha made landfall along the coast of Taishan in southern China’s Guangdong province on Sunday evening. The storm triggered emergency responses and led to widespread suspension of business and production activities. As per a report by The Global Times, the Guangdong Provincial Flood Control authorities have taken action. It has deployed 10 working groups to oversee prevention efforts in storm-hit areas.
As of 1 pm on Sunday, around 669,162 people had been evacuated across Guangdong: 12,036 from offshore areas and 657,126 from inland regions. According to China’s National Meteorological Centre (NMC), Wipha’s influence is expected to bring heavy to torrential rain to northern Hainan and the coastal parts of southwestern Guangdong. The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, along with the Ministry of Emergency Management, is now coordinating prevention efforts.
Meanwhile, as per a report by AP News, at least 3 deaths in the Philippines were reported as the storm intensified. Falling trees killed 2 people, while another drowned. Several people remain missing. Vietnam is also bracing for impact, with forecasts predicting strong winds and heavy rainfall across northern mountainous regions on Tuesday. This has raised the risk of flash floods and landslides. The authorities have prepared food supplies, rescue equipment to brace for the upcoming Typhoon Wipha.
Authorities have now issued emergency warnings to millions of residents in Vietnam. Forecasters expect Typhoon Wipha to make landfall soon between Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa provinces.
