According to the Hindustan Times, an overloaded ferry in the northeast of the Congo capsized and claimed 38 lives. Reportedly, the ferry was travelling in a convoy of other vessels. As per an eyewitness, the ferry was carrying more than 400 people because it covered two ports, Ingende and Loolo, on the way to Boende. The authorities believe that the passengers were mainly merchants returning home for Christmas.

Despite Congolese officials’ warning against overloading boats, the incident occurred because many people in remote areas could not afford public transportation on the few available roads. This latest incident has angered locals and raised questions about the lack of flotation devices in the convoy.

This incident is concerning as it comes just four days after another boat capsized in Congo’s Fimi River. The incident claimed 25 lives. As per reports, the ship was carrying 100 people, along with goods, and sank just a few hundred metres into the journey along the river.

Such incidents, reportedly, are quite common in Congo. As per officials, ferries and ships are often overloaded with cargo and people. In October this year, at least 78 people died when another overloaded boat capsized in Congo’s eastern region. Back in June, more than 80 casualties were reported in a similar accident near Congo’s capital, Kinshasa.

Cheap transportation is a big reason why people in Congo prefer to board an overcrowded ship rather than opt for other safer options. While the authorities have put punishments in place for violators, there has been no improvement. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.
