Tamil Nadu government recently issued orders for a conservation project of saving the endangered Nilgiri tahrs and working towards building a better biodiversity and ecosystem for the animals. On 29 December, IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared some stunning photos of Nilgiri tahrs and talked about the project of conserving them. With a budget of ₹25.14 crores, the project of protecting the tahr population and restoring its fragmented habitats is implemented for the time period of 2022-2027.

She even wrote these animals are the “real Khatron ke khiladi”. She tweeted “real Khatron ke khiladi – Nilgiri Tahr – endemic to shola grasslands of western Ghats- climbs steepest cliffs with ease.” Each and every picture of the lush greenery and these animals are so picturesque. If they look so stunning in photos, we can only imagine how beautiful it looks when witnessed with the naked eye.

The IAS officer also tweeted a video of Nilgiri tahrs in their habitat and shared further information about the project in a statement.

Nilgiri tahr is an endangered species found in their historic habitat, Tamil Nadu. In fact, the Nilgiri tahr is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. This species was spotted in huge numbers in the Western Ghats before becoming endangered. If you want to witness these mountain goats, you need to visit Kerala’s Eravikulam National Park in the Anamalai hills. This is where you will find this species in the most numbers with over 700 Nilgiri tahrs. Project Nilgiri Tahr is the first of its kind in India to reintroduce the tahr population.
