According to an article that was recently published by the Free Press Journal or the FPJ, the collapsed structure was a reinforcement cage at pillar 105C. It crashed onto a security guard’s cabin within the society compound.

Whilst no injuries were reported, the incident has raised serious concerns about the construction’s safety protocols and structural integrity. Prior to the collapse, workers had completed a 4.5-metre section and were in the process of installing an additional 8-metre steel reinforcement structure.

Due to traffic constraints at the busy junction, the construction team had secured the reinforcement using ropes attached to a concrete block, rather than employing a crane for the lift.

The accident occurred during the removal of temporary shuttering when a turnbuckle fastener, connected to the concrete block, reportedly broke after being struck by an unidentified object. This failure caused the securing ropes to slacken.

This resulted in the reinforcement cage toppling onto the security cabin, damaging its metal sheeting. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority or the MMRDA oversees metro projects. It has promised a thorough investigation into the incident.

MMRDA’s director of works, Anil Salunkhe, personally inspected the site to evaluate the damage and review initial reports. The findings are expected to be published within two days. The construction work is being undertaken by Milan Road Build Tech, operating as a subcontractor under Reliance Infrastructure.
