PM Modi Calls For Fight Against Obesity, Urges People To Reduce Edible Oil Consumption In Food

Obesity is a concerning issue in today’s society and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke strongly about the issue in his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio broadcast. He started a campaign against obesity and urged people to use less oil in food. To help him spread the word, he nominated 10 prominent figures from various fields. PM Modi Begins Campaign Against Obesity

Addressing the surge in obesity cases in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged people to use less oil in food. He stated WHO’s data and said that more than 250 crore people in the world were reported obese in 2022. Concerned, he further mentioned how excess weight can become the root cause of various other diseases in life. The PM also mentioned that one in eight people are living with obesity in today’s time. According to Deccan Herald, PM Modi also played out messages from Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra and boxing champion Nikhat Zareen who urged people to adopt healthy lifestyles.

Calling for immediate action, he nominated 10 prominent figures from various fields and urged them to spread awareness about obesity and how people can combat this issue. The PM tagged Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, businessman Anand Mahindra, Bhojpuri singer-actor Nirahua, shooting champion Manu Bhaker, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, actor R Madhavan, actor Mohanlal, singer Shreya Ghoshal, and philanthropist Sudha Murty. In the post, he also asked them to further “nominate 10 people each so that our movement gets bigger!”

India Has 3rd Highest Number Of Obese Individuals

Now, if you’re wondering if obesity is as big an issue as PM Modi makes it sound, then the answer is yes, it is! According to a study published in The Lancet, almost 70% of India’s urban and rural population is classified as obese. Not just that, India ranks third in the list of top 10 countries with the highest number of obese individuals. It is placed right behind the USA and China.

What’s concerning is that over the past decade, India’s obesity rate has almost tripled. This health crisis is affecting people of all ages and data shows that obesity rates are high in India, coinciding with the nation’s economic growth and changing lifestyle. It is to be noted that obesity causes many serious health issues like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, fatty liver disease, cancers, breathing problems, and kidney diseases, to name a few.
