Nikhil Kamath, during the 2-hour-long conversation with PM Modi, asked the leader if he liked Italian food like pizzas. The Prime Minister revealed, “Main khaana ka shaukeen nahin hoon. (I’m not a foodie).” Surprised, Kamath prodded, “Not at all?” ‘

“Not at all,” answered PM Modi. He revealed that because he isn’t a foodie, during his international travels, whatever food is served to him, he relishes it. Furthermore, he says that even if he is taken to a restaurant, given a menu and asked to select a dish, he wouldn’t be able to. “But are you able to visit a restaurant?” Kamath interjects.

The Prime Minister answered that he hadn’t visited a restaurant in years. Going back down memory lane, he remembered his early days in politics when he would interact with the late Arun Jaitley who was a big foodie. In his words, Arun Jaitley was an encyclopedia when it came to food. He passionately knew which restaurant in which city of India specialised in what dish. So, Arun Jaitley would take PM Modi to different restaurants during their trips together.

But PM Modi told Nikhil Kanath that he is unable to order a dish by reading a menu at a restaurant. This is because he isn’t familiar with the names of dishes and isn’t confident that the dish he orders is what he has in mind. He calls himself ignorant when it comes to food as he isn’t a foodie. PM Modi fondly remembers telling Aruna Jaitley, “Arun Ji, please order.” Since he is a vegetarian, that’s his only preference.
