Built by the Pandyan ruler, Sadayavarman Kulasekaran I, the Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is known for the magnificent three-storeyed gopuram. This gopuram stands majestically at the entrance of the shrine. While it was originally built in the 4th century, it was rebuilt in the 16th century by the Vijayanagar empire after the Mughals plundered it. It’s believed that Lord Shiva descended in Madurai in the form of Sundareshwar to marry Meenakshi, the manifestation of Maa Parvati. This grand temple is dedicated to this blessed union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
