Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first edition of the Indian Art, Architecture and Design Biennale at the famous Red Fort today. The event aims to position India as a leading global cultural effort—here are the details!
PM Modi To Inaugurate 1st Edition Indian Art, Architecture & Design Biennale
Over the course of the week-long celebration, the Red Fort will house gorgeous replicas of famous buildings. From December 9 to December 15, the biennale will also include exhibitions with topics selected for each day.
The prime minister’s idea was to create and formalise a cultural endeavour similar to the worldwide biennales held in cities like Sydney, Venice, Sao Paulo, Singapore, and Sharjah. The Ministry of Culture’s joint secretary, Mugdha Sinha, stated that the biennale has been planned for several months. She added that countries are becoming more aware of their soft power, especially in areas like West Asia, and that Prime Minister Modi had called for such an event in 2020.
Curators and partners for the exhibitions include the Archaeological Survey of India, the National Council of Science Museums, Lalit Kala Akademi, the Council of Architecture, and the Education Ministry in addition to the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA). The exhibition has 7 themes which feature baolis, gardens, architectural wonders, indigenous designs, women’s contribution to architecture and more!

According to Mugdha Sinha, throughout the world, cultural heritage is being used in adaptable ways. The goal was to highlight India’s rich legacy because it is so extensive. The culture ministry inked memorandums of understanding to reimagine cultural spaces with the cities of Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Varanasi in May of this year during the Museum Expo 2023.
The Objective Is To Foster Cultural Discussion
In a similar vein, the ministry and NGMA organised a concert with multiple Grammy winner Ricky Kej at Mumbai’s Gateway of India a few months before. The biennale comes after other events including the August Festival of Libraries and the Museum Expo.
According to the PMO, its purpose is to foster cultural debate by facilitating discussions between artists, architects, designers, collectors, photographers, and other art professionals and the general public. By incorporating architecture and design into the biennale, they are broadening the definition of art and using the potential of the freelance creative community.
In addition to the Red Fort’s thematic pavilions, an eighth gallery dedicated to public art will feature installations on the monument’s grounds as well as the creations of 125 artists chosen from over 550 submissions. Visitors can also browse an art mart inside Red Fort, which takes inspiration from the covered market known as Chatta Chowk Mart.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi will also open the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design at Red Fort and the Samunnati Student Biennale on Friday.
For the time being, the biennale begins in Red Fort. The exhibitions will remain on view for almost three months after the week-long convergence of design, architecture, and art.
