Post Maha Kumbh, Airfares Down By 73% For Flights To Prayagraj, Lucknow & Varanasi

With over 66 crore attendees, the Maha Kumbh was one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings! To give you a little more insight, ixigo recently shared data that show a massive surge in travel bookings to Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh Mela that began on January 13 and concluded on February 26, 2025. Massive Surge In Travel Bookings To Prayagraj During Maha Kumbh

According to ixigo, during Maha Kumbh, flight bookings witnessed 5.4x YoY demand, with nearby airports in Lucknow and Varanasi witnessing 69% YoY growth. As for train bookings, a 4x YoY surge was noted. Furthermore, bus bookings saw the highest surge at 20x YoY. Key origin cities contributing to the surge in demand were New Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur, Meerut, Varanasi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Ranchi, and Ayodhya.

Interestingly, Gen Z and solo travellers led this historic travel boom to Prayagraj for Maha Kumbh 2025. AbhiBus data noted a surge in young travellers, with those aged 20-25, making up nearly 26% of total bus bookings during Maha Kumbh. Gen Z bus travellers also saw a remarkable 20-fold YoY increase during the Kumbh Mela, and 50% of all bus passengers heading to Prayagraj were under the age of 30. Solo travellers made up 60% of total train bookings during this period.

Airfares Go Down Drastically After The Mela

We’re sure you all must remember how drastically the airfare to Prayagraj, Lucknow, and Varanasi surged during Maha Kumbh Mela. Now, however, they have come down by almost 73% on some routes. To give you a better understanding, the airfare from Delhi to Prayagraj between February 1 and 6 was about ₹15,763. Now, it has dropped by almost 72% and costs about ₹4,360.

Airfare from Mumbai to Prayagraj has dropped from ₹18,343 to ₹6,037; on the Kolkata-Prayagraj route, the prices went from ₹14,051 to ₹5,398; and flights from Bengaluru to Prayagraj now cost ₹7,200, a massive 73% drop from ₹27,330!
