The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has proposed plans to develop new transit corridors, connecting Lohegaon Airport to Pune’s growing southern suburbs. Authorities believe this extension will help ease traffic and improve last-mile connectivity to the airport. Scroll on to know more about this.
Maha-Metro To Connect Southern Suburbs To Lohegaon Airport
According to Hindustan Times, Maha-Metro has unveiled plans to develop new transit corridors connecting Lohegaon Airport and Pune’s Kondhwa, NIBM, Yewalewadi, and Undri. They have also proposed a spur from Ramwadi to Lohegaon and an extension from the Civil Court to the city’s growing southern suburbs.
The proposed metro extension aligns with Line 3 of the Pune Metro. Maha-Metro will determine whether to undertake the development independently or integrate it with the existing Line 3 project team, which is currently under construction by the Tata-Siemens consortium. The authorities are developing new metro corridors with an aim to encourage greater use of public transportation, reduce commute times, and foster sustainable urban growth.

All You Need To Know About This Extension
According to the proposed plans, the expansion of Pune Metro on this route will include a 3-km spur connecting the existing Ramwadi station to Lohegaon Airport. This will help improve airport accessibility for the residents. Furthermore, a 20-km metro corridor has also been proposed from the Civil Court interchange to Yewalewadi, featuring an extra spur to NIBM to serve the growing transit needs of the southern suburbs.
According to the extension plans, metro connectivity has also been proposed to extend to Kondhwa and Undri. As per the latest report, Maha-Metro has invited consultancy firms to prepare an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the planned corridors.
The AAR report will help evaluate various transit models such as metro rail and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). It will further assess parameters like cost-efficiency, environmental impact, ridership potential, and compatibility with Pune’s existing metro transit framework. Based on all the evaluations, the DPR will project specifications, financial requirements, and implementation schedules, Hindustan Times reported.
