AI Warning Systems Installed In Manjri Wadi Village To Prevent Human-Leopard Conflicts In Pune

Pune has seen a steady rise in human-leopard encounters in recent years. The increase in the leopard population in the area and the bad habit of humans encroaching on the homes of these big cats are cited as the main causes. But now, the Forest Department of Pune has installed AI warning systems in Manjri Wadi village and nearby areas to prevent conflicts and ensure the safety of both humans and the leopards.

AI Systems Installed To Prevent Human-Leopard Conflicts In Pune

To limit the increasing movement of leopards and prevent human-leopard conflict in Pune’s Manjri Wadi village, the Forest Department has adopted smart technology. The authorities have installed AI-enabled cameras and automated sirens in several locations. As per a report by Hindustan Times, this advanced AI system will alert villagers in real time if a leopard approaches the camera. This whole system includes a halogen light, a siren, and a high-resolution camera.

Regional Forest Officer Gyaneshwar Pawar shared with Hindustan Times that as soon as a leopard enters the detection range of the camera, the siren will start blaring. Along with the siren, the halogen light will also switch on. This allows clear visibility of the leopards even in low-light areas. The whole system is fully automated and does not require any human intervention.

A System That Ensures Human Safety & Respects Wildlife

According to a report by Hindustan Times, once the leopard moves out of the area or away from the camera’s detection range, the siren will automatically stop. This technology not only promises safety for humans but also respects the leopard’s natural movement without disturbing it. The Forest Department believes that this newly installed AI-based system will play a significant role. It will create a safe environment for villagers and also for the big cats

If the results are positive, the authorities are planning to implement this AI system in other sensitive regions of Pune where human-leopard conflicts are common. Villagers, too, have welcomed this initiative. For them, this system comes as a relief, especially at night. Families living near forested areas will also benefit greatly from these AI-based systems.

This initiative is great. It ensures human safety and respects wildlife. We hope it proves to be successful so that other regions in Pune, where human-leopard conflicts are common, can see these systems installed too.
