Passengers are often sceptical of hopping on long-haul flights for one reason— jet lag. This sleep disorder occurs when the body’s internal clock is out of sync. It can leave one feeling tired, exhausted and unable to sleep at bedtime and having difficulty in staying awake during the day. Australia’s flag carrier, Qantas recently revealed two food items that can significantly reduce jet lag. So, say hello to travel and goodbye to jet lag!
Foods To Reduce Jet Lag? Chilli & Chocolate!
Australian Airline, Qantas, recently conducted a study to make in-flight improvements to its long-haul flights, especially the world’s longest flight—20 hours long—from New York and London to Sydney. The study conducted by Qantas and the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre has revealed that two foods — chilli and chocolate— can help reduce jet lag. So, the airline has stated that they shall incorporate these ingredients in their meals to help passengers cope with jet lag. Also, some other helpful ingredients are caffeine and spices.
Apart from food, the Qantas study reveals that adjusted lighting, dining schedule and tailored sleep are also tools to help passengers fight jet lag. A news release by Qantas from its still-unpublished research says the secrets lie in a specialised sleep schedule. Better quality sleep is all one needs to fight jet lag as it also shows better cognitive performance after a long-haul flight.
It’s All About Good Quality Sleep On Long-Haul Flights
The study also encourages passengers to integrate stretch and movement activities during their flights. Also, the meal timings will be changed to align the body clock to the time zone at the destination. To do this, the crew will alter wake-up and sleep patterns by including fish and chicken dishes paired with carbohydrates.
Comfort foods like milk-based desserts and soups will encourage them to catch up on good rest. Qantas explains its telos that is to promote the production of amino acid tryptophan (‘Tryp’) in the brain so passengers can sleep well during the flights.
With Qantas including chocolate and chilli in its meals to combat jet lag, are you excited to travel on their long-haul flight? Or are you still sceptical about the same?
