At about 4,350 metres above sea level, Pangong Lake is the highest saltwater lake in the world. Its water seems to have been coloured blue and contrasts starkly with the arid mountains that surround it. Over 160 km long, the Pangong Lake is split between China and India, with a third of its length being in India.

The term Pangong Lake, one of Leh Ladakh’s most well-known lakes, comes from the Tibetan phrase “Pangong Tso,” which means “high grassland lake.” Pangong Lake is renowned for its ability to change colour, displaying various shades of blue, green, and red.

Numerous species of birds, including migratory ones, breed at the Pangong Tso Lake. The bar-headed geese and Brahminy Ducks are frequently seen in the summer. The lake is home to fish like False Osman and Kunar Snow Trout.
