The number of coronavirus cases is steadily rising and this is creating a shortage of spaces for quarantine facilities. Addressing the issue, the Indian Railways is planning to turn its coaches and cabins into isolation wards to expand the medical assistance in the country for curbing the pandemic.

Around 10 Million Isolation Beds

Indian Railways manages the fourth largest railway network in the world with 13,523 trains running across the country. Services of all these trains have been suspended till 14th April owing to the nationwide lockdown to contain the infection. The empty coaches and cabins of the trains might be offered as ICU units for the patients. They will have facilities like beds, trolleys, ventilators, pantry, consultation rooms and more. These coaches will be sent to those parts of the nations that are worst affected by the crisis.

Railways is also planning to offer Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARME) vans to serve the cause. These are rail ambulances, usually employed in treating patients of rail accidents.
